UPS Packaging-Secondary Package Design For Shipping Integrity

Shipping IntegrityClearing  Drop Test  is a key criteria for design of a successful package and hence a successful product . A properly designed package can address many of the potentially damaging transportation related problems. Drop testing is used to determine the package ability to retain and protect the product inside after a free fall.

Axiom developed Virtual Drop Tests  using CAE simulations for a Asian Computer Peripherals major as a part of UPS development process

The use of virtual tests led to
  • Rapid Design changes
  • Increase Product Robustness and Safety
  • Less R&D to Manufacture Cycling Time

Program Highlights

  • Developed and used a simplified CAE based design methodology
  • Developed a new design approach which integrates the elements of design of each face to a create the complete package
  • Final package was developed incorporating manufacturing constraints
  • Final integrated drop tests were carried out
  • Tooling for EPS package was developed
  • Physical Drop Test was carried out in the laboratory using the pilot lot of the package
  • Major cost savings as a result of no re-work

Result :

The product package passed the physical drop test in the first pass and hence there was no expensive re-work.
